Its not so easy being green...

Well its not! Its easy to cop out, its easy to be lazy... it takes thought and effort and deviation from your standard routine.... And a great place to start this deviation is here at Rapanui, a eco-fashion company from the Isle of Wight.

Hows about this.... Instead of driving down the local shops (Hello Co2 emissions) and purchasing a bleached cotton blend run of the mill T shirt (that is sure to be bought home in a plastic bag) log onto Rapanui where you can be kind to the world that we live (and save yourself some petrol money) buy purchasing a item of clothing made from natural organic fabrics in a Fairwear Foundation audited, wind powered factory. Impressed? I sure was... but wait till you read the next paragraph... it will blow your mind!

You see the super cool, undeniably rad, completely wonderful thing about Rapanui is they make it easier for people to see where clothing comes from and how it is made so you can make informed choices. They call it traceability.

Rapanui takes a total life cycle approach to their product's human, environmental and climatic impact, and address each aspect. This is not a clothing company ticking the green box. This is a company aiming to change the entire fashion industry. Rapanui uses Certified Organic fabrics, Fair-Trade labour and Renewable Energy.

I know I know! Again with the post that has nothing to do with photography, but if it wasn't for dudes like Rapanui founders Rob & Mart we wouldn't have much of a beautiful world to take photos of would we! To find out more click here

This photo is a little strange

We had just arrived in Hanoi from Singapore... It was 40 degrees plus and we had been wondering the streets of downtown Hanoi looking for our hotel for what seemed like forever... Once we arrived we were greeted but that famous vietnamese smile, lead up the narrowest staircase in all of Asia, squeezing our backpacks through ancient walls and into a tiny room to settle in for the evening... and boy did we settle in, after our day in transit there was nothing to do but take off the majority of our clothes... grab a beer and casually recline in front of the fan... metally preparing for the day of exploring we had ahead of us...

This may not be a amazing landscape from Halong bay or a atmospheric market shot from Saigon but every time i look at it it reminds me of what travel is all about... the journey - not to mention the sweet relief of getting to your chosen destination...

Sea tribes

I never get sick of pouring over Ryan Tatars work... Amongst various exhibitions and trips he is constantly contributing to a little ongoing project of his called sea tribes which aims to, in Ryan's words "document the individuals, landscapes, and curious activities of small pods of surfers and seamen along varied coastlines while exploring an interesting fragmented, yet collective, subculture of wave sliders scattered around the globe"

Of course its all shot on film using a assortment of vintage manual cameras, check out his handy work here

The internet is a strange strange place...

Yep that's right you heard me! TWO strange's! This is a photography blog filled with inspirational works by many amazing photographers... yet the most downloaded image on my blog EVER is the opening collage i put together for my other website Kill All Artists.... I wonder what anyone would want with the images above? The mind baffles!

Kate Graham...

I went to primary school with a Kate Graham so when i stumbled across a Kate Graham photography blog the only reason i clicked through to it was because I wondered if it might be the same Kate Graham... it wasn't but I'm sure glad i wondered such a minuscule possibility in the first place... This Kate Graham is a wonderful photographer and i really enjoy checking out her work, especially when she shoots film.

She has just had some shots developed from her Leica... my favorite is above but you can check out more here!

Travel Photography

So I'm always ranting about how film is so much better than digital because digital photos just sit in a back up hard drive that rarely sees the light of day... turns out film (well my film) is not much better... sure you go to all the effort to get your shots developed but putting them in albums is a whole other story... most of my rolls are in a plastic bag under the desk in the study! shame shame on me...

So it was with a sense of "times are gonna change" I need to get shit done that i bought 3 beautiful frames this week (black edging white mount) and I'm going to immortalise a triptych of my favorite travel photos from my last trip to Asia... turns out narrowing it down to just 3 ain't that easy...

Any suggestions? You can check out my travel gallery here.

The good old days

While this doesn't directly have anything to do with photography it relates somehow to what i was talking about yesterday with the digital revolution and things like film and records being left in the past.... would life be so bad with out digital? Read the below, its quite a entertaining reminder /perspective. I was born in the early 80's but I'm thankful the world was not all digital then and have highlighted below what relates to me.... would love to hear what you remember... its sad kids born in the 90s onwards will never have the simple life... they can opt for it when they are older and know better... but until then digital distractions are many!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1930's 1940's, 50's, 60's and early 70's!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos... They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

Take away food was limited to fish and chips, NO pizza shops, McDonalds , KFC, Subway or Nandos. Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on a Sunday, somehow we didn't starve to death!

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers, Bubble Gum and some bangers to blow up frogs with.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because...... WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O..K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in riverbeds with matchbox cars.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii , X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY, no video/dvd films, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no Lawsuits from these accidents. Only girls had pierced ears! (OK we had a Nintendo but it was the VERY first and used rarely)

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time...

We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them! Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet because we didn’t need to keep up with the Jones’s!

Not everyone made the rugby/football/cricket/netball team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on MERIT!!

Our teachers used to hit us with canes and gym shoes and throw the blackboard rubber at us if they thought we weren’t concentrating. We can string sentences together and spell and have proper conversations because of a good, solid three R’s education.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.

Our parents didn't invent stupid names for their kids like 'Kiora' and 'Blade' and 'Ridge' and 'Vanilla' We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

Pretty crazy perspective huh... hope it gets you thinking...

Is this the future?

If you stood for a while - pondering, appreciating these images - appreciating how the light and the mood of a day can come together in one perfect moment to form one perfect image then analogue photography is for you my friend...

But what if I told you that it was all a lie? The images above are not even a little bit authentic. The light was perfect that day and no special mood filled the air... its simply a collection of pixels... tiny little squares masterfully placed together by some iPhone application or another - does it make the image, the final product of that moment any less special?

Does the fact that its digital take away from the essence of photography, or is it just another format? like 35mm replaced 120 film or CD's replaced tapes (& vinyls before that) We all love and use digital on a daily basis but should it really replace lo-fi photography?

Its a question I ask myself all the time and I am far from having the answer but I would love to know what everyone else thinks of the matter?

Photography is a calculated and precise but its also all about the beautiful accident, a unexpected result... there are no beautiful accidents where pixels are involved and I think that makes me kind of sad... but then on the flip side their are amazing photographers producing beautiful work all through a iPhone app...

Jeremy Edwards is one such photographer, thats his shot above and you can check out more of his work here or follow his From The Pocket blog where he takes a iPhone photo a day and posts it to his site... by all means they are beautifully composed images... but when you take away the digital filters and enhancements does it make it any less special - You decide....

PORTROIDS

Portroids is a project run by a 36 year old mystery man... He basically jams a Polaroid in your face, takes a photo and whether your famous or not asks you to autograph the aforementioned Polaroid before it develops...

Why? who bloody knows, he offers no explanation on his website or blog but from the archives it appears he's been at it for 7 long years... makes for some pretty interesting results... Poor Adrian Grenier looks a little shocked if you ask me...

The wild wild west

I just stumbled across a flickr photo set called the Wild West... Its a series of Polaroids taken on a 17 day road trip from Chicago to Nevada and back again via Yellowstone National Park... The photos are beautiful and it got me to thinking what kind of photographic project Ill undertake in my travels next year?

Of course I'll be tying disposable cameras to trees still for the Hey You! Say Cheese Project and I'll be teaching photography at a orphanage in Mexico but I've been toying with the idea of something else? A photo a day using a Polaroid perhaps? Kind of a heavy load when I'm already taking a digital, lomo and 35mm (pentax or VITO I'm not quite sure yet) Perhaps I need some kind of theme? Or perhaps i just need to stop thinking about it so much and taking photos of what ever I gosh darn please :)

Good Morning America...

So Ive been getting all excited about world travels lately... sure I don't leave until sometime next year but the research part is fun for me. Its great to learn something new, educate myself on what I'm about to see, even though I know no book could ever prepare me for the experiences I have on the road I keep reading anyway... especially as it scares me to start saving.... saving more and saving fast!

Did you know it costs $34 for a campsite in the Florida Keys!!! And $75 bucks go to Disneyland!!! OK OK so I don't even want to do the later - although it would be cool to take a Polaroid of a life size mickey mouses feet... but that's another story. Point is America is expensive my friend (thank god for that dirt cheap 6 months I'll be spending in South America before i get there)

Above is a rough outline of the drive we'll be doing - I cant wait to take photos of kitch road side diners and baron landscapes...Been to America? (north, south or central) or happen to live their? I would to hear some great places to explore and take photos....

Leandro loves a good palm tree

Leandro over at Cheap Plastic Goodness loves a good palm tree, seems every second post is some sought of amazing picture taken from a somewhat obscure angle - but as long as he keeps turning out shots like the above (taken on Holga 120CFN usingexpired Fuji Provia RDPIII Chrome film and cross processed in C-41) then who am I to complain!

Check out more of his stunning lo-fi work here.

Its easy being green

I took this photo a few weeks ago and have been meaning to write about it ever since. It was the greenest trip up the street Ive ever taken... I rode my bike for starters so no nasty CO2 being emitted into the earths atmosphere buy moi.

I hit up 7 different (locally owned) shops, ticking various chores off my list and managed to walk away with a grand total of ZERO plastic bags (thank you wicker basket on the front of my bike, you are the best purchase I have ever made) For a Saturday morning it doesn't get more environmentally friendly than that!

Then the afternoon was spent taking photos at a friends wedding with my new Voigtlander VITO - all in all a pretty wonderful day if you ask me... Oh and the blurry photo above was taken on my iPhone (sad i know) but as far as apps go the hipstamatic is pretty darn nifty.

Dont forget to buy film

I don't know about you but I am constantly forgetting to buy film, Its yet to sink in its not something you can just "pick up on the way" anymore....

Being born in 1982 I didn't completely grow up in the digital age... I remember when the Internet first came to our household and the look on mums face when she got her first mobile phone (and was wondering just what the hell to do with it) and I certainly remember being able to waltz into the local camera store, supermarket or chemist only to be greeted by a wall of film for your grubby little mittens to chose from.

Alas, my friends, those days are behind us. Now if you want film it's all about the premeditated purchase... You go online, find the specific roll or pack of film you are after, order it from god knows where (Australia, the UK or America) and wait patiently until it arrives... be sure to give yourself plenty of time too - There is nothing like the sheer panic of it being Friday and your 10 packs of Polaroid film have not arrived when you fly out to Cambodia on the Saturday!

I run this little disposable camera project called Hey You! Say Cheese and I needed a disposable camera on my way down the south coast a few weeks back only to have the 16 year old check out chick at Woolworth's laugh in my face at my request - So I ask what about film then, do you sell film? Needless to say more chuckles followed and I walked out empty handed.... the chemist down the road was not much better "we might have 1 or 2 rolls left on the back shelf but that's all we have"! Even the local camera store was a bitter disappointment (did you know they don't even sell film cameras anymore!!!!)

Rants aside I do have a point and that point is DON'T FORGET TO BUY FILM... consider this your friendly reminder for that wedding/birthday/road trip you have coming up. The Lomo Shop has 120 color slide film on sale now too so its a great time to buy, click here to make your purchase!
